Sound of the week
Experimenting with Reaper, a sequencer/mixer/effects program. The sounds are made by the software synths Crystal, Bassdrum, and Modelonia. The drum sound is altered by a nicely named reverb effect called Crowd Chamber.

In the screenshot above, the first “row” in the main window is the master track; the turquoise line controls tempo. The second row is the track for the bowed-string instrument (and the seagulls, which show up if the bowed-string sound goes on long enough); the blue broken line controls one aspect of the timbre of the instrument. The third row is the bass drum with a line to control Crowd Chamber’s reverb effect. The fourth row is the vibraphone-like sound (Modelonia is a physical-modelling synth—it doesn’t produce sounds from static waveforms or samples; it generates them by calculating the output of various physical setups) in the present instance a modified plucked string. The whole sequence is played twice with very slight modifications.
