Seals

A really class outfit needs a seal. What better way to get one than to use the Official Seal Generator at Says-It. You get a choice of symbols and flourishes, and you can choose whatever colors you want. The one on the right has undergone a systematic process of degradation, much as Being itself has done since the Pre-Socratics. You will notice also the passage from dogmatism to skepticism. That is not because Philosophical Fortnights has discovered a new reason to doubt, but because our memory isn’t as good as it used to be. The world, it seems, grows ever more forgettable.

Metaphors that never leave the station dep’t:
… the consequences of the declines in housing activity and house prices … have so far not derailed the prospect that economic growth will return toward trend at the end of 2007 and in 2008.
Consequences derailing a prospect? But perhaps the obscurity is no accident. Alan Greenspan perfected a horoscopic mode () of economic discourse, and mealy-mouthed vaporousness has become part of the job description at the Fed (that’s why the phrase “irrational exuberance” stood out). Plosser is saying that the effects of the declines don’t alter the likelihood that growth at the end of the year or later will be what it was, on average or according to some measure of the “trend”, sometime in the past.
Maybe a diagram will help.

() Sample quotations from Chairman Greenspan. I have been selective, of course. Most of the hedging occurs in his prognostications. About the past he is usually unequivocal. But the power given to the Federal Reserve to make decisions affecting the US economy, and thus all of us, is based on its reputed capacity to predict the course of the economy, and even if the Fed were good at predicting the effects of its own decisions, still the authority of Greenspan and his colleagues depends in part on their having a reputation for good prediction generally.
In short, financial markets along with households and businesses seem to be reasonably well prepared to cope with a transition to a more neutral stance of monetary policy. Some risks necessarily attend this transition, but they are outweighed in our judgment by those that would be associated with maintaining the existing degree of monetary policy accommodation in the current environment.
The intensification of geopolitical risks makes discerning the economic path ahead especially difficult. If these uncertainties diminish considerably in the near term, we should be able to tell far better whether we are dealing with a business sector and an economy poised to grow more rapidly--our more probable expectation--or one that is still laboring under persisting strains and imbalances that have been misidentified as transitory.
The recent impressive advances in productivity suggest that to date any impairment of efficiency of U. S. corporations overall has been small. Efficiency is of course a key measure of corporate governance. Nonetheless, the danger that breakdowns in governance could at some point significantly erode business efficiency remains worrisome.
